A great start to 2013 for all at 1st Shipley Scout Group

1st Shipley Scouts have had a great start to 2013 with a variety of exciting events filling their diary. From the purchase of a minibus to thrilling trips, the whole Scout Group has experienced something new this year!

Starting with the youngest members of 1st Shipley, the Beavers are looking forward to what might be their first night-away for some of them, when they have their sleepover together in June. As well as staying up late and eating lots of food, the Beavers will be developing green fingers as they plant their previously decorated plant pots in the field at the scout HQ.

The Cubs Scouts were keen not to miss out; in March they had their own exciting Spring Camp to look forward to. The pack, along with their leaders, made the journey down to the coast to explore the history behind Dover Castle and its surrounding grounds. With the opportunity to explore the many rooms that lay within the castle, as well a guided tour of the historic wartime tunnels that lie beneath it, it was an enjoyable and educational trip for the Cubs. That evening they enjoyed a movie night and overnight camp. Next day they all went on a long walk before packing up. For some of the Cubs this was their first Camp away; it’s fair to say that every one of them had a great time.

As the summer draws nearer the Scouts are taking every opportunity they get to spend some time in the sun. They recently visited Weston’s Farm in Itchingfield to see first-hand how the farm operates. As well as getting to meet some of the farm’s newest arrivals such as the lambs and cattle they were also lucky enough to get a ride around the 160 acres of farmland on the tractor.

Finally nine intrepid Explorer Scouts from Paladin took full advantage of their good relationship with the Knepp estate by camping in the wooded area near the bothy at the start of February half term. Among the skills learned and put into practice were water purification techniques, animal tracking, knife, axe and saw work and most ambitious (and delicious) of all, cooking legs of lamb in a Fiji oven. Later in the month, the Explorers were lucky enough to go on a crazy night of Donutting together at Guildford Ski Centre; everyone thoroughly enjoyed careering down the dry ski slope on great big plastic rings, despite the freezing weather.

The latest addition to the 1st Shipley Scout Group is a shiny big blue bus! As the previous minibus was pretty much on its last legs, it was time for the Group to invest in an updated model. This was possible thanks to all of the fundraising that the Group have done together to raise the significant money required. Good times for 1st Shipley Scout Group.
